What is Elementary Catechesis?
Catechesis is a year-long formation program in which your child will be able to build a closer relationship with Jesus Christ through prayer and understanding of the scriptures. Your child will also have a chance to make friends and build community with his or her class. Throughout the year we will have lessons as well as FUN activities on topics God, the Trinity, Mary, the Saints, and the Sacraments. There will also be opportunities for extra meetings and sessions for anyone who is interested, whether you are new to Catechesis, you are receiving Sacraments this year, or you just want to continue growing in your faith!
We invite and encourage all children who do not attend Catholic school to attend our Elementary Catechesis program.
What's the curriculum? While we encourage our volunteers and Catechists to think outside the box and use plenty of scripture and other outside resources, we still have a foundational curriculum that is used for our Catechesis program/process. This year we will be using Our Sunday Visitor's Alive in Christ. To learn more about Alive in Christ, including previewing your child's grade level, visit Alive in Christ's main website.
For more information about Our Sunday Visitor and to check out some of their other publications, visit Our Sunday's Curriculum Website.
Volunteers?: Catechesis thrives on volunteers. God is calling anyone who wants to serve God and His children in our community. Whether you are a parent or adult relative, or you in college or out of college, all you need is an open heart, an open mind, a love for Jesus, and a love for leading children to Christ! High school teens are also invited to serve as well in the classroom; if your school offers service hours, this is a great way to get them while growing in your faith! Experience has told us that the more volunteers we have helping out, the better the experience is for the children and their families. Please be assured there are training opportunities throughout the Archdiocese as well as here in the Parish.
Other Ways to Help: Please be assured there are training opportunities throughout the Archdiocese as well as here in the Parish. In addition to those who can volunteer, we need help with contributing supplies such as paper, scissors, crayons, colored pencils, and markers, or other miscellaneous art supplies for the children. If you would like to contribute with that - particularly if your child is in Catechesis - please let me know.
If Interested: Attending Elementary Catechesis, and/or volunteering, you may either sign up online, or if you would prefer, download and print out the appropriate form. All forms are on the right side.
You may also pick up a form in the back of church after Mass or stop by the Parish office during the week. Feel free to reach out to us as well by e-mail or phone. Please bring forms back to Church, or scan and e-mail the forms.
Finally, what if Tuesdays do not work? We have At-Home Catechesis!
We offer Home Catechesis for those families whose children have conflicts on Tuesday nights. While we do encourage the Tuesday night Catechesis sessions, we want to be flexible and offer opportunities for everyone to grow in their faith, and be inclusive of all children in the parish.
We also understand that right now, there may be hesitation in attending group activities or faith formation outside of Church and school. If your family would prefer, Home Catechesis is a perfect option.
In Home Catechesis, your family would still receive the same Catechesis materials, and you would work with your children at home. Our Sunday's Visitor Alive in Christ has wonderful resources online for families who opt for "At-Home Catechesis."
Each family who opts for "Home Catechesis," we will meet and discern the best way to move forward for your children's faith formation that will enable children to be on the same page, while at the same time allowing for parents a chance to teach "to their style." I am also willing to assist in any teaching and formation of the children and families as needed. Please let us know.
As this time has given us an opportunity to discern the direction of our faith formation, I do want to start being intentional in meeting with each of you who opt for Home Catechesis at in order for us to talk, to check in, and in case you or your children have any questions or would like to discuss something you all have learned.
If Home Catechesis is a preferable option, please let me know so we can have a chance to discuss more. You may also pick up the same form and register online as well.
For Middle School and High School Students see Edge (6-8) and LIFE TEEN (9-12). Edge meets on Tuesday nights as well at 6:30-7:45 PM. Starting this year, Life Teen will also move to Tuesday nights as well for high school teens (9th-12th grade) who do not attend Catholic school.
Please note that our High School Youth Ministry program for everyone – both Catholic school and non-Catholic school teens – will still be Sunday nights in the
Parish Community Center, after the 6:00 PM Mass. Even if your family has
already attended another Mass that weekend, then your teen may arrive
starting around 7:00 PM; Sunday Youth Nights will go until 8:45 PM. Again, for
more information, please visit LIFE TEEN.
In addition, we also run Vacation Bible School each summer. We had a wonderful camp last summer, where our theme was "Parachuting with the Angels."
For more information on this summer's Vacation Bible School, which will be an "At-Home Family-led Vacation Bible School," and to register, visit this website.
