FUNERALS

PRAYING FOR THE DECEASED

Through the Communion of Saints, our prayers and sacrifices, united to Christ's redemptive sacrifice, can help the living, as well as the dead in Purgatory, which is the place or state of purification of the effects of sins, and the forgiveness of the guilt of venial sins, after death.  Purgatory assures the dead are truly ready for heaven.

There is a variety of ways to pray for the dead:
  • Funerals, held in church, bring comfort and light in the darkness of grief.  In funerals, the community prays for the deceased and their loved ones, and commends the deceased to God's loving mercy.  Contact the parish office to schedule a funeral.  The Archdiocesan brochure in the links section explains some policies concerning cremation and words of remembrance at a Catholic funeral.
  • Mass intentions give the faithful an opportunity to offer the best of prayers, the sacrifice of the Mass, for a soul in purgatory. The suggested offering for a Mass intention is $5.
  • Through indulgences, the church, drawing from the infinite merits of Christ to forgive and purify souls, grants the gift of God's remission (either partial or plenary (full)) of the pains of purgatory.  Indulgences are obtained by the living faithful and are connected with certain acts of sincere charity, devotion or sacrifice.
  • Other prayers and devotions, such as the rosary and the chaplet of Divine Mercy, are effective means of intercession for the Poor Souls in Purgatory, poor because they can no longer help themselves.
  • Families who have lost a child, in particular pregnancy or infant loss, are welcome to use The Garden of the Innocents, on the north side of church, to pray, to grieve, to find consolation and strength.  If you would like to order a memorial leaf on the Tree of Life in the Garden of the Innocents.
